Also known as “The Five-Story Building,” Hayashi Department Store opened in 1932 during the Japanese era. Located in Tainan’s West Central District, it was the first department store in southern Taiwan and the second in the country.
Equipped with advanced features of its time—such as a rotary dial elevator and a rooftop Shinto shrine (Suehiro Shrine)—it remains the only department store in Taiwan with an in-house shrine. After years of disuse and restoration, it reopened in 2014 as a cultural and creative department store, blending history with modern style.
